The term “green” is popping up everywhere and although its usage is heard extensively it pertains to a conscientious attitude towards lessening our impact on this planet. There are organizations that have been formed to help define and allot parameters to be able to use the term green or sustainable in regards to a product or service. Many of which are dedicated directly to the architecture, design and construction industry. Their main purpose is to compel manufacturing companies to make products using less waste, less off-gassing and utilizing more renewable resources to produce green products that conscientious designers and architects can specify in projects. This is a great beginning to a new way of designing and building and I am proud to be a part of such a progressive and responsible industry.
Although Pad Interiors supports all of these green initiatives, we take it one step further. One of our biggest green missions is to reuse what is still in good working order, or what can be made into good working order. We do this by evaluating each project carefully to see what elements can be reclaimed or reused in the new design. We feel that this is as green as you can get because this a.)prevents the item from going into a landfill b.) Doesn’t require the manufacturing of a new item and c.) doesn’t take additional resources in production and shipping. In other words the “greenest” approach is to not throw something away in the first place. This opportunity can also help the overall budget of a project and can add priceless nostalgia and character to a space.
Unfortunately, this is not possible in every job and is not for every client but we feel that at least our clients are given and have explored the option. The projects that don’t have the ability to reuse elements to fit within the new design plan may still be able to have some responsible impact by donating furniture or architectural elements that may be removed from the existing space to local charitable organizations that will either re-use the items or sell them and use the profits for their charitable organization. Pad Interiors would gladly help arrange this tax deductible option for any one of its clients.
While Pad Interiors wholeheartedly supports the green initiative and will always explore the most sustainable options for our designs we never compromise our clients projects, our mission is to balance and prioritize the plethora of options with the aesthetics and needs of each individual client.
